April Fools - Why Laughter Is The Best Medicine
The power of laughter is immeasurable—it fosters strong relationships, strengthens friendships, and even benefits your physical health. I mean, c’mon, laughter literally helps reduce stress and lowers the risk of a heart attack! What kind of superpower is that?!

Throughout my life, I’ve learned that laughter's power can help you overcome pretty much anything. There’s something magical about how humor and healing intertwine, taking the sting out of pain, shifting perspectives, and making even the heaviest burdens feel a little lighter. I still don’t fully understand where this power comes from, but I do know that learning to laugh at—and with—myself has been a huge part of my personal growth and mental wellness journey.
A big part of the best-friend relationship I’ve built with myself over the years is thanks to my dad, who taught me the importance of humor. For example, I’ve shared before that I’ve navigated depression and anxiety for years. I take medication for it, and honestly, I have zero shame in talking about it—or even making a joke about it. 😉 Laughing at and with my struggles doesn’t diminish their seriousness; instead, it diminishes their power to define me. Mental health awareness is crucial, and it should always be treated with care, but the label of “depression” doesn’t have to be a heavy weight on my shoulders. By finding humor in my experience and accepting it as just one piece of my beautiful, messy, human existence, I’ve found that it becomes easier to navigate. It weighs less.

As I’ve mentioned in previous articles, I was incredibly lucky to marry my best friend in the universe—my favorite person in the world. Ian is hands down one of the funniest, wittiest, and most creatively humorous people I’ve ever met. Our relationship reminds me of Claire and Phil from Modern Family—especially the moments when they’re being goofy, teasing each other, or just having a damn good time. Ian also happens to be a huge prankster, with a special talent for scaring the shit out of me when I least expect it. And while I hate it… I also kinda love it.
One of my biggest fears in life is losing Ian, and if I’m being honest, I think about it way more than I’d like to admit (anxious brain things, you know?). But when I do, everything shifts. Suddenly, the little hairs he leaves in the sink when he shaves, the stray socks in the living room, or the ridiculous amount of effort he puts into trying to scare me—they don’t annoy me anymore. Instead, I feel grateful. Because what if? What if one day, he lost interest in these things? What if the laughter faded? His humor and our shared silliness have taught me so much about gratitude and connection, about cherishing the weird, messy, wonderful parts of life together.
